Experience the Real World Through Travelling

Tuesday, November 5, 2013

By Ted Hunter

I did not consider myself as a traveller until recently. Before, I consider travelling as a waste of time and money. I mean, with all those books, magazines, and movies, you would know everything about the world, right? That does not include the massive amount of information about the world in the Internet. Well, that was what I thought until I took one of those beachfront holidays to Majorca when my friends convinced me to take a break from work.

When I arrived in Majorca, the largest island in the Balearic Islands archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea, I found a place that is very different from what I studied or read in guide books and the Internet. Majorca's capital, had always been a rustic, old, dusty town from my readings. What I saw was a bustling metropolis with all the conveniences of modernity. Hidden behind castles, churches, rickety fish ports, and cobblestone pathways are new apartment buildings, shopping centres, marinas, and wide avenues. I had always envisioned the place to be very provincial with horses and donkeys walking down the street. The city's main thoroughfares were teeming with hundreds of cars and buses.

The next day, Guerrero, my contact and an ex-classmate of my wife, fetched me at the hotel where I'm staying so he can show me around. It was disappointing when he told me he was taking me to the famous ruins. I mean, who would want to see disintegrating ruins in the first place? But having seen the ruins of the Roman City of Pollentia, I was dumbstruck. They were works of art from nature. It makes me wonder how ancient Romans were able to put those rocks up on top of the other. It makes one question how those huge stone pillars were built without the aid of modern day engineering techniques. Makes you wonder how they were able to come up with very intricate designs without the aid of technology. I had always thought that the ruins would just bore me to death; I was wrong.

Guerrero then brought me to where the best beaches in the world were. Beaches to me were identical: seascapes and sandy shores. When I got there, however, I was amazed. The sand was finer than in most beaches I saw. As the sun began to descend over the horizon, the view simply spectacular. Since we were situated near Albufera, which is a natural park, we saw different kinds of sea birds, some of which I can't identify. No wonder that this area is popular for bird watching. Being a photographer and an avid bird watcher myself, the place proved to be very interesting.

That evening, Guerrero took me to a nice promenade near the beach of Alcudia to have dinner. I tried the conventional dishes that I've seen in travel guides; they are definitely delicious! And most importantly, the people were actually very friendly; some of Guerrero's friends who happened to dine there that night made me feel at home. It was a huge contrast to my belief that Spaniards are aloof and daunting.

Travelling opened my eyes to the reality. Indeed, what we know in the Internet, books, or movies is nothing like the real world. Now I believe that travelling, indeed, is a great teacher.

Tips To Help You Enjoy Your Travels

By Filiberto Steffens

Although intended to be a leisurely and relaxing activity, travel can sometimes be unnecessarily stressful and fraught with disaster. A vacation can turn into a nightmare if you conduct your trip without the proper planning. To make the most of your travel plans in the future, read through the tips below.

Traveling in groups can be a great way to have more fun and to also save money. If you are traveling with people that you are close to than you can share hotel rooms which can greatly cut back on the price that you can expect to pay per night.

If your travel plans include photo opportunities through train, plane, cruise ship or hotel windows, pack a handful of moistened, single-packaged glass cleaning wipes in your camera bag. Don't miss out on some great photos or come home with a memory card full of blurry prints because of smudged, fingerprinted or dirty windows.

You can find a great deal on a hotel room. You can get the best deal on a great hotel by booking early through your travel agent with flexible dates. Also, look into hotels that cater to business people as they will have low weekend rates. Travel agents are a great resource to finding the best hotel rates and packages.

GPS units can really help out when you are traveling in an unknown area. With just the touch of a few buttons they can lead you right to someone's doorstep. It's important to remember, however, that GPS units don't work in all locations. Just in case, don't forget your maps!

When making a long journey on a plane, you should pack along some non-liquid snacks of your own. Fresh snacks, especially a juicy apple, sweet strawberries or plump grapes, will break up your voyage and be a welcome change to the heavy airplane food that sits like a brick, inside your stomach. Not only will you save a bundle by not buying that expensive airport food, but you will have a great conversation opener with any nice-looking neighbor, eyeing your snacks!

If you're staying in a hotel, especially in a less developed country, and you're worried about someone possibly coming into your room in the night, bring a doorstop with you. These handy little wooden or rubber wedges are usually used to hold doors open but they can just as easily be used to hold doors closed.

If you are traveling with children, purchase disposable cameras for them. They do not cost a lot of money, and they will keep your child busy throughout the trip. Ask your kids to snap pictures of anything they want to remember from the trip, and you may end up with some pretty interesting pictures.

Be aware of the potential for bedbugs while traveling and always check the bedding as soon as you get into your room. Do not put your luggage on the bed. Bedbugs are more likely to come home with travelers that allow their bags to touch bedspreads or mattresses. Instead, place your bag on a chair or other piece of furniture that is not upholstered.

When traveling with a digital camera, always take along an extra memory card. You will most likely be taking more photographs than normal and the card in your camera can fill up quickly. You will also want to put the settings of your camera on the higher resolutions in order to preserve your memories in a print version later, and this will take up more memory space on your card.

Scan your passport and email a copy to yourself. It rarely happens, but in the chance that you lose your passport during your travels, this will be a lifesaver. Getting a replacement passport can be a headache and having a copy can make the process much faster and less traumatic.

If you are going on extended vacation and leaving your home behind for a month, it might be worth it to you to stop cable fees and other utilities. Make sure to inform other services you subscribe to, such as pool cleaning or housekeeping while you're away. Doing all of these things, ensure that you will have a worry-free vacation.

When traveling to a different area, make sure that you're open to different local customs. Some ideas might be strange, but be respectful of other cultures. Not showing respect and not paying attention to local customs can be a real downer for your trip causing you to not feel welcomed in a city.

If you're traveling to a foreign country, look into hiring a guide that speaks English to take you around the city. For about $15-20 a day, you can get a local that speaks English well to show you all the must sees, help you navigate the area, and even just help you with things like ordering food or reading signs.

To make sure you have room for souvenirs you purchase on a trip, pack an empty duffle bag. The duffle bag can be folded up and stored with the rest of your items. When you're ready to leave, open up the duffle bag and use it to carry home everything you bought on your trip.

When planning a trip to an overseas destination, check to see which vaccinations you might need. Your doctor or the CDC are both good places to get information. Be sure to plan this step a few weeks before you plan to leave, because some vaccines do not take effect immediately.

If you're going on a road trip, bring an extra gallon of water with you. While you may think to bring bottled water, you probably wouldn't think of bringing a jug. A gallon of water can be useful for brushing your teeth, washing sticky stuff off your hands, etc. You never know when you may need to wash your hands and not be close to a rest stop or worse, to be near a disgusting rest stop. No matter where you're planning on traveling to, you need some great tips to use once you get there. You just never know what kind of troubles you'll encounter on the drive, on the plane, at the hotel, or at any other stop along your journey. Use the tips above to help you out when traveling.

By Ann Hundt

The candle will make the room smell better and feel more like home. Candles are relaxing, give off a wonderful glow and are romantic. Many companies make these candles in convenient small sizes and without any waxy drips.

Choose your clothes carefully when you are going on a trip. Choose clothing items with multiple potential uses. For example, footwear and jackets can usually accommodate more than one outfit. This will let you travel lighter.

Plan ahead and exchange some of your currency before you leave on our trip. In some countries, getting currency changed outside of business hours can be difficult. Many large banks can sell you foreign money, so head there prior to going the airport.

If a travel site has an E-tracking option, utilize it. This will let you know how you should travel if you want to save the most money. It will send you an email if a flight you booked or are watching lowers in price.

It's a good idea to get National Park passes if you often visit National Parks. National park season passes are around 50 dollars, and they are good for every park in the country.

Take the time to make a packing list. Anywhere from a week to a few months before you go on your trip, make a list of the things you absolutely need to pack. This will enable you to pack only the things that you really need and it can also ensure that you will not leave anything behind.

Unfortunately, you cannot depend on an airline to see to your needs, even if your traveling involves a lengthy flight. A flight is often more comfortable when you bring along comfort items; such as a blanket, a pillow or your own set of headphones. Perhaps you should bring some snacks if it is allowed.

Always carry an updated color photo of your child with you. This will come in handy if they are ever lost. Losing a child in a foreign place can be very stressful and scary. No matter how thoroughly it is guarded against, it can still happen.

Take the local currency with you on your next trip. Some countries have difficulty changing currency past business hours. You can also visit a major bank and get some foreign currency before you even start your trip.

West Indian Travel To The USA

By Shannon L Smith

No self respecting West Indian traveling to the USA would certainly ever before leave real estate with everything aside from an empty travel suitcase in order to return with baggage loaded with "Americana." North Americans are frequently astonished at the amount of standing out sacks Bajans bring to the ticket counters. But they need to know; in Barbados, we do not have the similarity WalMart, KMart, Target, or any of the other significant retailers, so a journey to the North is constantly a buying occasion.

The new 50lb weight limit each suitcase limit imposed by a lot of major airline companies has actually impacted their purchases. BWIA West Indies Airways (known informally as BEE-WEE or BWEE), that are extremely acquainted with West Indian visitors .

A tasty starter of plum tomatoes over bib lettuce tossed salad was followed by roasted duck breast, new potatoes, and haricot verts (green beans to the culinarily tested). When was the last time you heard anybody proclaim an in-flight meal? BWEE is by far the innovator when it involves plane food, however this was good food anywhere. As a matter of fact, BWEE, is the only USA to Barbados airline that still provides for a proper meal and not a boxed program lunch. And the solution, well, thanks Pearl for making our air travel so delightful and memorable.

As a working mother and spouse with an incredibly requiring job, Pearl depends on her caretaker in Trinidad to cook many of the family dishes. As the web pages started to increase in phone numbers, the result was "Cooking area Conflict" by Pearl Bhagan - a simple to adhere to cookbook for the operating family.

As a functioning mom and wife in an extremely requiring task, Pearl relies on her maid in Trinidad to cook many of the family members dishes. Then she had to find an answer to her hubby's desire for Pearl's personal design of food preparation. So she started to write down a collection of her unique cooking treatments and the required components for her housekeeper to follow. As the web pages started to grow in number, the result was "Kitchen Encounter" by Pearl Bhagan - a simple to follow cookbook for the working household.

Both USAIR and BWEE offer frequent packages to and from Barbados - occasionally greater than 60 % off - via their website. And if you're fortunate adequate to discover a Pearl, you'll be managed with correct West Indian hospitality.

Such an encounter happened on our air travel from Washington to Barbados on BWEE this week when we satisfied Pearl Bhagan, a 36 year veteran in the airline sector. Pearl was functioning the initial course cabin and promptly acknowledged us to be fellow foodies and kindred spirits when we requested an added spicy Bloody Mary. With increased eyebrow and a devilish smile, Pearl delivered a SPICY refreshing boosted by her very own homemade pepper sauce which she never leaves estate without! And the solution, well, thank you Pearl for making our air travel so unforgettable and pleasurable.

The family can enjoy the weather while strolling on the South Beach. Disneyland is a popular attraction however, the group can also enjoy playing in the sand and have fun splashing water with everyone. And before dark, the couples can dine near the beach while watching the sunset.

South Beach has hotels, restaurants and shopping experience to offer. After heading to the beach, the next day can be fun not only to the kids but also for adults. Going to educational places like the Coral Castle, Monkey Jungle, Seaquarium and the jungle island will help them experience the animal kingdom. There are also different museums around the block.

The project committee first started the idea of making a small museum to be used by the children in Dade County in 1949. Since then, as the population grows bigger, the museum also made adjustments and became one of the best in the US. Anyone can interact with their exhibits like checking the birds of Florida, learning the climate change and many more.

If a family member were a fan of basketball, they would not want to miss the American airlines arena where the Heats play. The percentage of seeing the team is close and if the family is lucky enough, everyone can spot different artists that will perform for that day.

There are other Things to do in Miami like visiting the Marlins Ballpark for baseball fans and Doral resort for golfing in the afternoon. After the tiring week of touring, buying souvenirs for friends and other relatives can change their aura afterwards.
